I’m interested in the work of Artus Van Briggle and the Van Briggle Pottery studio he left behind after his death in 1904. I find their matte surfaces of many colors to be interesting, Van Briggle formulated all of his own glazes including the first vellum glaze for Rookwood, although they took his name off the papers when he had to move to Colorado because of his Tuberculosis. Another aspect of the work that I am drawn to is the Art Nouveau references made in the imagery. They often have work with long, sensuous curvilinear lines and common motifs of swans, crocus, columbine, daffodils, dragonflies, and pine cones, which I find I am attracted to.
